Over 100 hedgehogs have been humanely transferred by Uist Hedgehog Rescue (UHR) to the Scottish mainland during the latest phase of trapping in the Benbecula area of the Uists.
The hedgehogs were captured by the Uist Wader Project, a partnership of Scottish Natural Heritage, RSPB Scotland and Scottish Government working to protect Wader birds on the islands.
UHR is a coalition made up of Advocates for Animals, Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust, British Hedgehog Preservation Society and International Animal Rescue have been working together since 2002 to relocate the hedgehogs.
Advocates for Animals' Campaigns Director and Spokesperson for UHR, Ross Minett, added: “Uist Hedgehog Rescue has been pleased to work closely with the Uist Wader Project once again this year, to successfully remove many more hedgehogs from the Uists.
“All our hard work is not only of benefit to the hedgehogs we have removed but also to the wading bird populations on the islands. We hope that funding will allow our constructive working relationship to continue in the future.”
The Hedgehogs are initially transported to Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Trust in Ayrshire where they are looked after until their release back into the wild.
