Time for clearer meat labelling say MEPs

Consumers will be able to make a more informed decision on the meat they buy after the European Parliament judged that all meat from animals which have been slaughtered without stunning must be labelled.
An amendment was passed by the Plenary Session of the European Parliament on 'Information to consumers' legislation, requiring that there was more clarity over the origins of the meat that people buy.
The European Parliament's press release stated: "Meat labels should indicate where the animal was born, reared and slaughtered... In addition, meat from slaughter without stunning (according to certain religious traditions) should be labelled as such."
Libby Anderson, Advocates for Animals' Policy Director welcomed the amendment:
"We are hoping that the position will be maintained through all the stages to come of this regulation, which has a long way to go. But it is excellent that MEPs have taken a stand on this issue"
