Uncertainty.  But with a tinge of optimism … Advocates for Animals is hopeful that the incoming coalition government regime will accept that, in the face of major economic and social problems, it would be folly to prioritise the Conservative plan to repeal the Hunting Act 2004. And there is additional reassurance in the shape of correspondence from the office of Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, published on the website of dedicated anti-hunt campaigner Brian May.  Mr Clegg’s caseworker says:

An end in sight to snaring in Northern Ireland?

Earlier today (March 25), members of the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Environment Committee momentously voted to ban the use of snares in Northern Ireland. Although the Committee considered allowing the use of snares to continue under strict licence it decided that a total ban was the best way forward.

Failure to ban snares splits SNP

The refusal of Scottish Nationalist ministers to abide by party policy and ban the snaring of wild animals has sparked growing discontent within the ranks of the SNP.

One party official has resigned in disgust, others are known to be unhappy and several SNP MSPs have signalled their opposition. Snaring, they say, is cruel and inhumane, sometimes forcing innocent animals to slowly strangle themselves.

   

Seals to be given better protection as Marine Bill passed by Scottish Parliament

Seals in Scottish waters will have more legal protection under the Marine (Scotland) Bill which was today passed by the Scottish Parliament.

Following an intensive campaign by our organisation, the Bill, which replaces the outdated Conservation of Seals Act 1970, was today strengthened and passed.
