"A what?"

"A fire walk."

"You mean, walking on a fiery bed of hot coals?"

"Exactly."

"And why would any of our supporters want to do that?"

"Because they want to raise money for animals. Oh, and maybe because they're a little bit mad."

"Is it safe?"

"Of course! These specialists have been running these events for 20 years with no problems. Besides, people have been walking on fire since prehistoric times."

"Right."

"Right."

"This should be interesting."

That's pretty much how my conversation with everyone in the office went when I told them I'd like Advocates for Animals to hold a fundraising fire walk this summer.

But it's true: human beings have been walking on hot coals for thousands of years, be it a test of faith, a display of strength, or simply because they can. But the point is, it's one of the most exhilarating, frightening, satisfying, nerve-wracking, yet beautiful things you can do, and you CAN do it.

I spent a few hours reading in scientific journals about how coal has low thermal conductivity and the water in the foot doesn't, therefore the heat can't transfer into the foot efficiently, or something to that effect, and I still don't completely understand it. And I'm still nervous about taking the big walk. But I know I'll be safe, and I know that if I can do this, I can achieve anything.

Besides, I'm already in too deep! The courtyard is booked, the fire-walking coaches committed and the fire performers hired. I can't back out now. But really, why would I want to? It's going to be quite a show: deep in the dark cobbled streets of Edinburgh's ancient Old Town, there we'll be with our glowing walkway, spectacular fire performers, a smoking barbecue and humming throng of spectators. All of us coming together to take part in this, possibly our greatest test of mind over matter, just to help the animals that we love so much.

And if I can do it, well, you most certainly can. All you need is £20 and a nice handsome pair of feet. Join us! It's the hottest charity event of the year!.

The OneKind Fire Walk is taking place on the evening of 8th June at the Three Sisters, Cowgate, Edinburgh.
